Both Will and I enjoy trekking, hitchhiking and freedom camping so once I said I was going to Mount Cook he decided to come as well. We started hitchhiking from Dunedin around noon and we got to a camp ground close to the mountain just before the sunset. I have never hitchhiked that far before in one day. It was far. The people we got the last ride from was two Germans. We spent the following day doing a very nice hike with some good views of the mountain and glaciers.
After the mountain all of us stayed in Lake Tekapu, a small place but with a nice lake view. At this stage only one thing remained on my list of things, that I really wanted to do in New Zealand. Way back in Sweden when I decided to go here, a good friend of mine told me he had a mission for me. The mission was to look up a man and a woman that my friend Anders had met a long time ago when he was in New Zealand. Will and I hitched in to Temuka the place where they lived back then. I had an address and a name. We had a map, so we started walking to the house. Fortunately Temuka is not a big place so it didn't take us very long. I rang the doorbell and a man opened, as I explained why I was there it was like he had known from the beginning why I was there. The man, Brian, took us fishing, and it looked like he enjoyed it as much as we did.
When I left I felt very pleased with my adventures here in NZ, but Will and I wanted to make one last hitchhiking adventure before going to Christchurch. We started and wasn't really sure where we were gonna end up. After hitching with almost ten people we hadn't gotten far at all. We were now in Darfield and we didn't wanna stay there so we just started walking towards Christchurch. When the sun was about to set we stopped and camped where we saw a few trees.
Next morning we were in Christchurch. I had heared about the earthquake that happened three years ago, but I didn't think it would still be this bad. The city had no centre, it was a city of suburbs!
